Thatpressthesoul，orwringthemindwithanguish

Beyondparisontheworstarethose

Byourownfolly，orourguiltbroughton:

Inevryothercircumstance，themind

Hasthistosay，“Itwasnodeedofmine:”

But，whentoalltheevilofmisfortune

Thisstingisadded，“Blamethyfoolishself!”

Orworserfar，thepangsofkeenremorse，

Thetorturing，gnawingconsciousnessofguilt—

Ofguilt，perhaps，whenweveinvolvedothers，

Theyoung，theinnocent，whofondlylovdus;

Naymore，thatverylovetheircauseofruin!

Oburninghell!inallthystoreoftorments

Theresnotakeenerlash!

Livesthereamansofirm，who，whilehisheart

Feelsallthebitterhorrorsofhiscrime，

Canreasondownitsagonizingthrobs;

And，afterproperpurposeofamendment，

Canfirmlyforcehisjarringthoughtstopeace?
